Sollie Road, the main thoroughfare in front of the Wynnfield subdivision, has earned a grim reputation as one of the most dangerous roads in Mobile County. Each year, numerous accidents occur along this stretch, resulting in serious injuries and, tragically, loss of life. The combination of high traffic volume, poor lighting in some areas, and narrow shoulders has made this road a hazardous passage for both drivers and pedestrians.

One particularly devastating incident occurred on the evening of Friday, September 3, 2021. At approximately 7:55 p.m., Mobile Police officers responded to a call near the Falling Leaf subdivision, not far from Wynnfield, where a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found 84-year-old Jinsheng Shi, a visitor from China, lying on the side of the road with life-threatening injuries.
According to the preliminary investigation, Shi had been walking north in the southbound lane of Sollie Road when he was hit by a vehicle traveling south. The driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, showed no signs of impairment. Shi was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
This tragic event underscores the inherent dangers of Sollie Road, particularly for pedestrians. The lack of dedicated pedestrian walkways, coupled with fast-moving traffic, creates a perilous environment for anyone traveling on foot. Poor visibility during evening hours further exacerbates the risk, as does the road’s design, which lacks adequate shoulders and safe crossing points in many areas. These factors have contributed to a string of accidents over the years, making Sollie Road a hotspot for both vehicular and pedestrian-related incidents.
Local residents
Local residents, including those in the Wynnfield subdivision, have long expressed concerns about the safety of Sollie Road. Calls for improvements such as better lighting, the addition of sidewalks, and stricter speed limit enforcement have been ongoing, but progress has been slow. Many believe that the road’s dangerous conditions are not just a public safety issue but also a failure of infrastructure planning and investment.
Shi’s tragic death highlights the urgent need for action. While the driver in this incident was not at fault, the lack of pedestrian infrastructure likely played a significant role in the accident. Preventing future tragedies will require collaboration between local authorities, transportation planners, and the community to implement meaningful changes. Until then, Sollie Road remains a cautionary tale for both drivers and pedestrians in Mobile County, a road where caution and vigilance are a matter of life and death.
